Research subject

Anthropological research on the acquisition and developmental processes of skills, proficiency, and tacit knowledge

Research outline

This research focuses on the process by which well-skilled groups living in various Asian and African areas acquire tacit knowledge through body techniques. The study scrutinizes 1) behavioral research that shows biological development in their daily practices, 2) proficiency of body techniques according to their ages, and 3) the relationships between the biological development and socio-cultural developments in groups to examine institutionalizations in the socio-cultural contexts, and performs a cultural anthropological comparative verification. With well-skilled groups living in various areas in Asia and Africa, we focus on their body techniques (the form of body movement patterns), record and analyze the series of processes to acquire the skills required for those behaviors (acquisition process) with qualitative and quantitative scales, and demonstrate how they are correlated with the developmental stage of communities/societies. While analyzing the series of case studies by dividing them into two units, namely the unit for studying behavior of basic human needs in cultural context (co-investigators: M Shigeta, G Yamakoshi) and the unit for studying behavior in the style of expressions in biological development (co-investigators: K Fushiki. K Zanma), we intend to describe the pluralistic developmental process in order to contribute to the reformation of the conventional view of life, which the “Lifelong Sciences” aims to achieve.
